On the afternoon of August 5, local time, after attending a series of foreign ministers’ meetings on East Asian cooperation in Phnom Penh, State Councilor and foreign minister Wang Yi held a press conference for Chinese and foreign media to comprehensively explain China’s position on the Taiwan issue. Wang Yi expressed that despite China’s resolute opposition and repeated representations, US House Speaker Pelosi actually brazenly visited Taiwan, China under the connivance and arrangement of the US government. It is only natural that China should make a resolute response.

In response to the US side’s allegation that China has changed the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, Wang Yi said that this is totally slander and slander. In the communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States in 1978, it was clearly emphasized that the government of the people’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is a part of China. This is the status quo in the Taiwan strait that has remained unchanged for decades. But this status quo has indeed been broken. The saboteurs are not China, but the separatist forces of the United States and Taiwan.

Wang Yi said that in 2000, the US side placed the so-called “Taiwan Relations Act” unilaterally concocted before the three Sino US joint communiques. Isn’t that a change in the status quo? A few years ago, the US side openly included the so-called “six guarantees for Taiwan” in the us one China policy statement. Is this not a change of the status quo? Isn’t it hollowing out the one China policy? It is suggested that those in power in the United States should take a good look at the three joint communiques and know what is the real status quo of the Taiwan Strait and who has changed it.
